The Barn Journal

27 Steps in January

The shortest commute in Saskatchewan, and somehow the longest walk of the year.

Here’s a Saskatchewan winter confession: it’s 27 steps from the house to the Loft. We’ve counted. In July, it’s a lovely little stroll. In January, it’s an expedition.

A Saskatchewan Winter Has Opinions

Anyone who has spent a winter on a Saskatchewan farm knows the routine. The wind finds every gap in your coat. The snow drifts exactly where you need to walk. And the cold has a way of turning a 27-step walk into something that feels closer to 270.

But the Barn doesn’t care what the thermometer says. Orders still need cutting, names still need engraving, and somebody’s Christmas gift is waiting on that bench.

The January Survival Kit

A few things make the trip possible: a good pair of boots, a coat that has seen better days, and a travel mug of coffee that will be lukewarm by the time it reaches the top of the stairs. Possibly cold. Okay, definitely cold.

Once you’re up in the Loft, though, it’s a different world. The laser hums, the heat press warms up, and once the door shuts behind you, the prairie wind is somebody else’s problem for a while.

Why We Keep Making the Trip

Because on the other end of those 27 steps is the best part of the job: turning someone’s idea into something real. A first-Christmas ornament. A sign with a family name. A gift for someone who’s hard to shop for, made to say exactly the right thing.

Every one of those pieces is Handwerked in the Loft, one at a time, no matter how much snow is in the yard.

A Little Prairie in Every Piece

If you’ve ever wondered why our pieces feel a bit cozy, now you know. They come from a place where winter is long, coffee is essential and a warm Loft at the top of the stairs is worth every one of those 27 steps.

Ordering During a Saskatchewan Winter

Winter is our busiest season, and the earlier you order, the better, especially for Christmas. Tell us your date when you order, and we’ll let you know honestly what’s possible. Every piece is made to order, so nothing is sitting on a shelf waiting for you; it’s Handwerked once you’ve chosen it.

You can pick up at the Barn, just north of St. Gregor, or we’ll send it by Canada Post anywhere in Canada. Either way, it arrives with a little bit of a Saskatchewan winter in it: made somewhere cold, by someone who knows exactly how much a cozy gift can mean in January.

Favourite Winter Gifts From the Loft

When the snow flies, a few pieces always seem to keep the Loft busy. Personalized Christmas ornaments with a name and a year. Welcome signs for the front door, so visitors know they’ve found the right place. Mugs and tumblers for the coffee that keeps everyone going until spring.

Kits are a winter favourite too. A laser-cut sign and a few pots of paint make a cozy evening for the whole family, and the finished piece goes up on the wall as a reminder of the night you made it together. However you shop, it’s a gift with a bit of prairie warmth built right in. And if you’re reading this from somewhere warmer, we’re happy for you, and only a little jealous. A Saskatchewan winter builds character, or so we keep telling ourselves.
