AI art tools have handed a lot of people a paintbrush they never thought they’d pick up — and honestly, some of what lands in my inbox is fantastic. The catch is that a picture on a phone screen and a picture on a 15 oz mug are two very different things. Screens forgive; sublimation ink, heat presses, and a 40-watt laser do not.

That’s where Grey Barn Handwerk comes in. Since 2018 I’ve been turning other people’s ideas into things they can hold, and AI-generated artwork is just the newest way those ideas arrive. Send it over, tell me what you’d like it on, and I’ll tell you plainly what will work, what needs a little help, and what it’ll cost.

A Quick Word About Colour and Wood

The most common thing I see: a gorgeous full-colour AI painting, and a request to put it on a cutting board. I love the enthusiasm — but a laser engraver has exactly one crayon, and it’s “burnt.” It turns light and dark into deeper and lighter scorch marks; it can’t print red, blue, or a sunset.

So here’s how it shakes out. If you want colour, we go to a mug, a tumbler, a shirt, a tote, or a pillow. If you want wood, we either pick an image that was born for engraving — line art, silhouettes, lettering, black-and-white illustrations — or I convert your colour art into a clean engraving-ready version. That conversion is real design work, and it’s one of the design fees listed below.

How It Works

Step 1: Send the File

Use the custom order form and attach your image — the biggest, cleanest version you have. Tell me what you’d like it on and roughly how many.

Step 2: I Check It Over

I look at size, resolution, and whether the artwork suits the product. If anything needs fixing, I’ll say so and quote any design fee up front — before a single thing is touched.

Step 3: Proof, Then Make

You get a mockup to approve. Once you say go, it’s made in the loft of the barn and ready for pickup in St. Gregor or shipping across Canada.

Design Fees — When Your Art Needs a Hand

Plenty of AI images arrive print-ready, and those cost nothing extra to prepare. Others need a bit of workshop magic first. Here’s what that looks like, so there are no surprises:

  • Print-ready file, no changes — no design fee. If it’s the right size and shape for the product, we’re off to the races.
  • Background removal or clean-up — stray edges, a busy background you don’t want, a stubborn watermark. Charged as a small flat fee, quoted before I start.
  • Edits and changes — adding names or dates, adjusting colours, fixing the six-fingered hand AI is so fond of drawing. Priced by the amount of work involved.
  • Vector (SVG) conversion for laser work — turning a colour picture into a crisp engraving- or cut-ready file. This is the most involved job, and the one that makes wood pieces look intentional instead of muddy.
  • Upscaling for large prints — AI images are often small. Bigger products need bigger files, and sometimes that means rebuilding detail.

Every design fee is quoted in writing before any work begins, and it’s yours to say yes or no to. You’ll never open an invoice and find a surprise.

PNG or JPG is perfect for anything printed. If your AI tool offers a larger or higher-resolution download, take it — bigger is always better. For laser work, SVG is ideal, but don’t worry if you don’t have one; that’s what the conversion fee covers.

Yes — with a conversion. The laser engraves in shades of burn, not colour, so I’ll turn your image into a clean black-and-white version first. Simple, bold artwork converts best; a detailed colour painting may lose a lot in translation, and I’ll tell you if I think it will.

Any of them. Midjourney, DALL·E, ChatGPT, Canva, Adobe Firefly, Bing, Leonardo — if it made a picture you like, send it.

Close, but not identical. Screens glow; fabric, ceramic, and wood don’t. Colours can shift slightly and very fine detail can soften. That’s why every order gets a proof before anything is made.

You do, as far as we’re concerned — I only use your file to make your order. Just be sure the image doesn’t copy someone else’s logo, characters, or trademarks, because I can’t reproduce those.

It depends on the job, so I quote each one before I start. Quick clean-ups are small; full vector conversions are more. You’ll always know the number before you say yes.

Timelines depend on the product, the season, and whether design work is needed — I’ll give you a realistic date with your quote. Remember, this is a one-woman workshop, so replies can take a few days, sometimes a little longer at harvest.
