The 100-Year-Old Grey Barn Behind the Name
Every name has a story. Ours is about a century old, and it’s still standing on our farm.
People ask us all the time: “So, is Grey Barn Handwerk actually in a grey barn?” It’s a fair question. The answer is a little more fun than a simple yes, and it starts with a building that was standing on the prairie long before any of us were.
A Barn With a Century of Prairie Weather Behind It
On our farm, just north of St. Gregor, Saskatchewan, there’s a grey barn that’s about 100 years old. It has stood through a century of prairie winters, spring storms and long harvest days, and it still looks out over the fields like it has somewhere to be.
It’s the kind of building that makes you slow down. Weathered boards, honest work, built to last. When it came time to name a business built on those same ideas, there wasn’t much of a debate. It had to be Grey Barn.
So Why “Handwerk”?
Handwerk is German for craft, the old-world idea of a trade done properly, by hand. It’s a nod to Loriann’s German roots, and to the kind of work we want every piece to show: careful, personal and made to be kept.
Put the two together and you have Grey Barn Handwerk: a little bit prairie, a little bit old country, and all of it handcrafted.
Wait, the Shop Isn’t in the Grey Barn?
Here’s the twist. The work actually happens in a different barn on the same farm, up in the Loft, 27 steps from the house. That’s where the laser engraver, the heat press and the sublimation station live, along with more ideas than there are hours in the day.
Yes, that’s two barns. We know. Keeping them straight is part of farm life.

Since 2018, One Order at a Time
Loriann started Grey Barn Handwerk in 2018, after 25 years in IT. She traded the desk for the Loft, and the business has grown one order at a time ever since: ornaments, signs, mugs, bunnyhugs, cutting boards and plenty of custom pieces nobody had ever asked for before.
What the Grey Barn Handwerk Name Means for Your Gift
That old grey barn is a pretty good reminder of what we’re aiming for. Something sturdy. Something with a story. Something that’s still around, and still loved, years from now.
So when you order from us, you’re not getting something pulled off a warehouse shelf. You’re getting a piece that’s personalized, Prairie Crafted and Handwerked in the Loft, the kind of gift that makes people ask, “Where did you find this?”
Visiting Grey Barn Handwerk
Grey Barn Handwerk welcomes visits by appointment, and plenty of customers choose pickup at the Barn instead of shipping. If you do come out, you’ll find us just off the highway, 3 ¾ miles north of St. Gregor, with the Loft at the top of the stairs and a coffee pot that is rarely empty.
Can’t make the drive? That’s what Canada Post is for. Every order is packed with the same care, whether it’s heading down the road to Humboldt or across the country to someone who misses the prairie. Either way, you’re getting a piece with a real story behind it, and a name that’s been about a century in the making.
