Gone Fishing — With Paint! A Nordic Lodge DIY Paint Night to Remember!

Handmade in St. Gregor, Saskatchewan

From Vendor Fair to Lakeside Paint Night

Custom DIY paint kits are perfect for creating memorable experiences at retreats, parties, and group gatherings. When Carla Komarnicki needed something special for her women’s retreat at Nordic Lodge on Reindeer Lake, she didn’t want another generic craft activity. She wanted something rustic, memorable, and distinctly prairie—something her guests could make, personalize, and take home as a real keepsake.

She wanted something functional—door hangers that could actually be used on cabin doors, porch walls, or lake houses. She also wanted the experience to be easy enough that everyone could participate, regardless of artistic skill level.

We designed the custom DIY paint kits with lakeside sunsets and crackling fires in mind. Everything needed for a complete paint night, packaged and ready to go.

What’s in the Gone Fishing DIY Kit

Each kit includes everything needed to create a finished 14-inch wooden door hanger:

14-inch birch round door hanger: Smooth, pre-sanded surface ready for painting. Pre-drilled for easy hanging with included hardware.

Custom “Gone Fishing” stencil: Hand-designed in our St. Gregor studio. Playful typography combined with a fishing-hook motif that captures cabin life.

Premium acrylic paint set: Weather-resistant, fade-proof colors that hold up to sun, humidity, and outdoor use. Colors selected specifically for cabin and lake house aesthetics.

Quality brushes and palette: Three brush sizes (fine detail, medium, and bold strokes) plus a reusable paint palette.

Step-by-step instructions: Easy-to-follow guide written for all skill levels. Includes tips for distressing edges, adding metallic highlights, or creating custom color blends.

Hanging hardware: Everything needed to mount the finished hanger on a door, wall, or cabin exterior.

These DIY paint night kits include everything needed for a successful group event.

The Nordic Lodge Paint Night

Last week, Carla sent us photos and a message: “The paint night was a huge success—laughter, storytelling, and creativity flowed as freely as the lake breeze!”

Each guest left with a unique door hanger. Some chose pastel sunsets. Others went bold with bright fish scales or distressed wood finishes. A few added their family names or lake coordinates. All carried the same “Gone Fishing” spirit.

The kits did exactly what they were supposed to do: provide structure without limiting creativity, and create a shared experience that resulted in something tangible and lasting.

Why DIY Paint Kits Work for Group Events

These DIY paint night kits work for group events because they’re accessible, social, and create lasting keepsakes. DIY paint night kits bridge the gap between wanting to create and having the confidence to start.

They’re accessible. You don’t need to be an artist. The stencil provides the foundation. The rest is personal interpretation.

They’re social. Painting side-by-side naturally encourages conversation, laughter, and shared creativity. No forced icebreakers needed.

They create lasting keepsakes. Unlike consumable favors or generic gifts, finished hangers become cabin décor, porch accents, or housewarming gifts that actually get used.

They’re versatile. Bridal showers, bachelorette weekends, family reunions, neighborhood gatherings, team retreats—anywhere people want to create something together.

They support local craft. Every stencil, instruction booklet, and wooden round comes from our St. Gregor workshop. When you order these kits, you’re supporting Saskatchewan makers and authentic prairie craftsmanship.

Perfect for Saskatchewan Lake Culture

The “Gone Fishing” theme isn’t random. It fits Saskatchewan lake life—the cabins, the docks, the boats, the lazy summer afternoons when the fish aren’t biting but nobody really cares.

These door hangers work because they capture something real about prairie lake culture. They’re not trying to be coastal or cottage-country generic. They’re distinctly here.

Hang one on your cabin door and people immediately know: fishing happens here, relaxation is the priority, and cabin time is sacred.

Host Your Own Paint Night

Thinking about hosting DIY paint night kits for your group? Here’s what works:

Keep groups manageable: 4-8 people is ideal. Small enough for everyone to get help if needed, large enough to feel like an event.

Set up stations: Each person needs workspace, access to water for rinsing brushes, and room to spread out supplies.

Plan for drying time: Finished hangers need 2-3 hours to dry before handling. Either plan the event with time built in, or have a system for safe transport of wet pieces.

Provide snacks and drinks: This is a social event. Food and beverages make it better.

Play music: Background music sets the mood and fills awkward silences while people concentrate.

Don’t stress about perfection: The point is creativity and connection, not producing museum-quality art. Embrace the imperfections.

We’re happy to provide additional guidance for first-time hosts. Just ask when you order.

Questions About DIY Paint Kits

Can kids participate?

Yes, with supervision. The paints are non-toxic and water-based. Kids 10+ can usually handle the project independently. Younger kids may need help with detail work.

How long does a paint night take?

Plan for 2-3 hours including setup, painting, and cleanup. Drying time is additional.

Can I customize the design?

For bulk orders, yes. We can modify text, add personalization, or create entirely custom stencils.

What if I mess up while painting?

Water-based acrylic paint can be wiped off while wet. Once dry, you can paint over mistakes or incorporate them into the design. Imperfections often add character.

Do you offer other design themes?

Past kits have included prairie landscapes, seasonal décor, wedding themes, and corporate branding. Reach out through our custom order form with your event details and we’ll design kits specifically for your group.

Can you ship to locations outside Saskatchewan?

We ship Canada-wide. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on destination and order size.
