Custom Wedding Songbook: Creating a Heirloom Keepsake for Stef & Joey
Custom wedding songbooks aren’t something we make every day. But when Mark walked into our workshop with an idea for his goddaughter Stef’s wedding gift, we knew we were about to create something specialโsomething that would outlast the flowers, the cake, and even the thank-you notes.
What started as a simple request for a framed wedding invitation became a hand-crafted wooden songbook filled with the music that tells Stef and Joey’s love story.

The Conversation That Changed the Project
Mark came in with a clear vision: he wanted to print Stef and Joey’s wedding invitation and layer it with lyrics from a meaningful song. Frame it, make it nice, give it as a wedding gift.
It was a sweet idea. Thoughtful. Personal. But as we talked it through over coffee in the workshop, Lori started sketching.
What if, instead of one song in a frame, we created an entire songbook? Not just their first danceโbut all the songs that mattered. The song from their first date. The one they sang badly on road trips. The lyrics that showed up in vows or toasts. A complete musical timeline of their relationship.
Mark loved it. “That’s exactly what I want to give them.”

Why a Custom Wedding Songbook Works as a Gift
Weddings are overwhelming. Beautiful, meaningful, emotionalโbut overwhelming. The day itself is a blur of moments that happen too fast to fully absorb.
Music is what brings those moments back. Hearing a specific song years later instantly transports you back to that dance floor, that ceremony, that feeling.
A custom wedding songbook captures that. It’s not just decoration. It’s a physical collection of the soundtrack that defined their relationship and their wedding day.
It’s functional. Unlike a decorative item that sits on a shelf, a songbook gets opened. On anniversaries. When they’re reminiscing. When they want to remember what mattered on their wedding day.
It’s personal. Generic wedding gifts are forgettable. A songbook filled with their songsโthe ones that actually matter to their relationshipโis irreplaceable.
It’s an heirloom. Wood, leather, and paper don’t need charging. They don’t become obsolete. A well-made songbook lasts generations. It’s the kind of thing that gets passed down with the wedding photos and the rings.
For Stef and Joey, this wasn’t just a gift from Mark. It was a reminder that their relationship has a history, a timeline, a story worth preserving.
Deciding What Goes in a Wedding Songbook
Mark didn’t come in with a complete list of songs. He had a few ideasโthe first dance song, something from the ceremonyโbut he wasn’t sure what else belonged.
This is where conversation matters. We asked:
What song was playing when they got engaged?
Do they have a road trip anthem or a song they always sing together badly?
Was there a specific song at the reception that became “their moment”?
Did anyone dedicate a song during speeches or toasts?
What was the last song of the night?
The answers created a natural structure. Not just wedding day moments, but relationship milestones. Songs that told the story of how Stef and Joey became Stef and Joey.
We settled on eight songs. Each one connected to a specific memory or moment. Each one part of their timeline.

Crafting the Custom Wedding Songbook
Every custom wedding songbook we make starts with materials that will last.
The Wood Covers
We selected premium wood for the front and back coversโthick enough to feel substantial, smooth enough to take engraving cleanly. We stained it with a rich, warm tone that would age beautifully over time.
Wood isn’t like printed materials. It develops character. The grain becomes more visible. The color deepens. In ten years, this songbook will look even better than it does now.
The Engraving
Using our laser engraver, we personalized the front cover with:
- Stef & Joey’s names
- Their wedding date
- A decorative motif that matched their wedding aesthetic
The engraving is permanent. It won’t fade, scratch off, or wear away. The same laser precision that we use for our custom designs ensures crisp, detailed work that holds up over decades.
The Interior Pages
Inside, we printed each song’s lyrics on high-quality paper. Not photo paper that will yellow. Not flimsy printer stock. Actual archival-quality paper designed to last.
Each song got its own page spreadโtitle, artist, and full lyrics formatted cleanly and readably. No crowding. No tiny fonts. Easy to open and actually read.
Between certain songs, we added photo placeholder pagesโspaces where Stef and Joey can add wedding photos, reception snapshots, or other mementos that connect to specific songs.
The Leather Binding
We bound the pages with genuine leather secured by metal rivets. This creates a rustic, heirloom quality that matches the wooden covers perfectly.
The leather binding is flexible enough to allow the book to open comfortably while being strong enough to hold the pages securely for decades. As the leather ages and develops patina, it will only become more beautifulโsoftening with use and taking on the character of a well-loved keepsake.
The metal rivets aren’t just decorative. They reinforce the binding points, ensuring the pages stay securely attached through years of opening, reading, and sharing.
This is old-world bookbindingโthe kind that creates books meant to survive generations, not just seasons.
The Moment of Delivery
Generic wedding gifts are practical. Kitchen mixers. Bedding sets. Gift cards to home stores. Nothing wrong with any of thatโnewlyweds need practical things.
But personalized wedding gifts like custom songbooks serve a different purpose. They acknowledge that this isn’t just any couple getting married. It’s these two specific people with this specific story starting this specific life together.
A songbook filled with their actual songs, from their actual relationship, created specifically for themโthat can’t be replicated. It can’t be returned or exchanged. It can’t be replaced if it’s lost.
It becomes part of their home, their history, their marriage. Years from now, when they’re dealing with career stress or parenting exhaustion or just the grinding routine of adult life, they can open that songbook and remember: this is why we chose each other. This is what we built together.
That matters more than another set of towels.

Other Ways to Use Custom Songbooks
While we created this one as a wedding gift, custom wedding songbooks work for other occasions too:
Anniversary gifts: Recreate the wedding songbook years later with updated songs from the marriage.
Vow renewal ceremonies: A new songbook marking the next chapter.
Parent gifts: Give parents or grandparents a songbook featuring music from their era and relationship.
Couples milestones: Commemorate engagements, significant birthdays, or retirement with personalized song collections.
Memorial keepsakes: Honour someone who’s passed by collecting the songs that defined their life.
The format is flexible. The impact is consistent. Music connects us to memory in ways few other things can.
Creating Your Own Custom Wedding Songbook
If you want to create a personalized songbook for a wedding, anniversary, or other milestone, here’s how it works:
Step 1: Gather the songs. Make a list of 6-10 songs that matter to the relationship. Include titles, artists, and why each song is significant.
Step 2: Choose personalization details. Names, dates, special quotes, or dedications you want engraved on the cover.
Step 3: Submit your custom order request. Share your song list and personalization details with us.
Step 4: Review the design. We’ll create a mockup showing the cover engraving and interior layout. You approve before we produce anything.
Step 5: Receive your heirloom. We craft your songbook in our St. Gregor workshop and deliver it ready to give.

Why We Love Making Custom Wedding Gifts
We make a lot of things in our workshopโmugs, cutting boards, signs, ornaments. Most of them are great gifts. All of them are made with care.
But custom wedding songbooks and other deeply personalized pieces hit differently. They’re not transactional. They’re collaborative. We’re not just making a product. We’re helping preserve something meaningful.
When Mark walked out with Stef and Joey’s songbook, he wasn’t just carrying wood and paper. He was carrying months of conversation about which songs mattered and why. He was carrying his relationship with his goddaughter and his hope for her marriage. He was carrying the physical manifestation of “I love you and I see your story.”
That’s why we do this work. Not just because we can laser-engrave wood (though we’re good at that). Because we get to be part of moments that matter to people.
Questions About Custom Wedding Songbooks
How many songs should I include?
6-10 works well. Enough to tell a story without becoming overwhelming. We can accommodate more or fewer based on your preferences.
Can I include photos in addition to lyrics?
Yes. We can design pages that incorporate photos alongside lyrics, or create photo placeholder pages between songs.
What if I don’t know all the song lyrics?
We can help source accurate lyrics for any songs you want to include. Just provide song titles and artists.
Can you match the wood finish to wedding colors or decor?
Yes. We have multiple stain options and can coordinate with wedding aesthetics or home decor preferences.
How long does production take?
Plan for 2-3 weeks from design approval to completion. Rush orders may be possible depending on our workshop schedule.
Do you ship outside Saskatchewan?
Yes, we ship Canada-wide. We package carefully to ensure the songbook arrives in perfect condition.
Can I add pages later if we want to expand it?
The leather and rivet binding is designed for the specific number of pages in your original design. We can create a companion volume or a second edition for anniversary years with additional songs.
What other personalization options are available beyond names and dates?
Quotes, song lyrics, dedications, coordinates, meaningful symbols, or custom artwork can all be incorporated into the cover design.
Congratulations again to Stef and Joey. And thank you to Mark for trusting us with such a meaningful giftโand for letting us be part of your family’s story.
